Tabloids are those sentationalist newspapers in UK. According to Wikipedia: “weekly or semi-weekly alternative newspaper that focuses on local-interest stories and entertainment, often distributed free of charge (often in a smaller, tabloid-sized newspaper format); or to a newspaper that tends to emphasize sensational crime stories, gossip columns repeating scandalous innuendos about the personal lives of celebrities and sports stars, and other so-called "junk food news" (often in a smaller, tabloid-sized newspaper format). As the term "tabloid" has become synonymous with down-market newspapers in some areas”.
Regarding newspapers, in Spain there are 4 big nationwide newspapers, El País (Prisa Group-left wing), El Mundo (RCS MediaGroup-right wing); ABC (Vocento Group-right wing) and La Vanguardia (Grupo Godó-right catalanist). In the year 2000, two foreign companies from Norway and Denmark introduced in Spain the tabloid format: 20 Minutos (20 Min Holding & Grupo Z) and Metro(Metro International S.A.. At first national media groups tried to stop these papers claiming that free newspapers was an illegal competition, but soon after the national media groups also were rushing to publish their own tabloids: Qué! (Vocento Group) and ADN (Grupo Planeta).
These are local newspapers, given out daily for free with short and swallow news reports. BUT, these papers are not very aggressive still, their life is short, competition is growing so they might become more and more sensationalist to catch a bigger market share but now they just reproduce main stream news. In 2007 a new paper appeared PUBLICO. It was sold but cheaper than the rest (50 cents vs. 1,10 €) , it brings more photos and graphs, shorter news direct language. Check their front pages versus a conventional newspaper: http://www.publico.es/estaticos/pdf/ This is a curious paper, it is sold together with serious newspapers but it also tries to differentiate with a more populist style. It belongs to a new media group: Mediapro Group, close to socialist party.
